Cultivating a Healthier Tomorrow: Nadia KVK Drives Soil Health Awareness with the Theme “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”

The foundation of a productive agricultural system, whether in a sprawling field or an urban garden, is its soil. Recognizing this critical truth, Nadia Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) recently spearheaded a significant initiative to champion soil preservation and sustainable farming practices among the local community.
In a dual-event programme that underscored a commitment to the environment and farmer welfare, Nadia KVK marked two important occasions: the global celebration of World Soil Day 2025 and a focused Soil Health Cards distribution drive.

The Official Theme: “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities”

Celebrated annually across the globe on December 5th, World Soil Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining healthy ecosystems and human well-being by addressing the growing challenges in soil management.
This year’s official theme, “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities,” brought a crucial focus to the often-overlooked role of soil in urban and peri-urban environments. The theme highlights that soil is the living foundation of our food systems, climate action, and biodiversity, all essential for building sustainable and resilient communities.
Nadia KVK began its commemoration on December 5, 2025, with awareness sessions emphasizing that urban soils are vital infrastructure that filter water, regulate temperature, and support local food production when managed sustainably. When sealed by concrete and asphalt, they lose these functions, making cities vulnerable to flooding and pollution.

Empowering Farmers with Knowledge and Resources

The awareness campaign culminated in a comprehensive programme on December 9, 2025, which saw the distribution of vital Soil Health Cards (SHC) to numerous farmers. The SHC scheme, launched by the Government of India, provides farmers with nutrient status reports of their soil, promoting balanced nutrient management.
The event specifically focused on farmers engaged in the Cluster Front Line Demonstration (CFLD) projects concerning oilseeds and pulses. The distribution of these cards empowers farmers with location-specific information on the nutrient status of their fields, enabling them to apply necessary amendments and micronutrients judiciously. This targeted approach helps prevent soil degradation, restore fertility, and increase the efficiency of agricultural inputs, ultimately boosting productivity and ensuring a healthier foundation for food production.

A Vision for Sustainable Agriculture

The programme was graced by the esteemed presence of Prof. P. Dutta, Director, Extension Education (DEE), Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV), along with other key dignitaries from the university. Their participation highlighted the strong institutional support for grassroots-level initiatives.
Prof. Dutta addressed the gathering, stressing the need for adopting bio-fortification and integrated farming system components to ensure nutritional security for the region’s large population. He praised the KVK’s cluster approach and encouraged farmers to leverage the scientific guidance provided by the KVK staff to transition towards more sustainable, climate-resilient farming systems.
The initiative is a strong step towards realizing the slogan, “Swasth Dharaa, Khet Haraa” – Healthy Earth, Green Farm – a guiding principle of India’s national soil health mission.
